How To Move AI Memory Between LLMs

Last updated: October 27, 2026

How do you move your ChatGPT memory to Claude? Ask ChatGPT to write out what it remembers about you, remove anything sensitive, then paste the text into Claude under Settings > Your Claude > Start import. The same copy and paste method works between most assistants, but only a summary of your memory travels, not your full history, and Anthropic calls the import experimental.

TL;DR: Key Takeaways

  • Claude can import memory on every plan. Anthropic's help center says import is available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, on the web and in Claude Desktop, and calls it experimental.
  • ChatGPT keeps two kinds of memory. OpenAI separates saved memories from reference chat history, and you manage both in Settings > Personalization > Memory.
  • The ChatGPT data export is not a memory export. OpenAI's export guide describes a .zip with your chat history in chat.html, sent by email with a link that expires after 24 hours, and does not say memories are included.
  • Gemini takes a different route. According to 9to5Google (March 26, 2026), Gemini imports memory by prompt and chats by .zip up to 5 GB, but not in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK.
  • Pasting memory is a data transfer. OWASP ranks Sensitive Information Disclosure second (LLM02) in its 2026 LLM list, so clean the text before you paste it.

What Moves and What Does Not

Only memory you can read as text moves between assistants: the facts, preferences and project details each one has saved about you. Chat history, files and tool settings do not transfer through the memory route. Each assistant stores and exports memory differently, so check the table before you start.

AssistantWhere memory livesOfficial way to get it outWhat to know
ChatGPTSettings > Personalization > MemoryAsk ChatGPT to list what it remembers; separate data export for historyThe export page does not mention memories
ClaudeSettings > Your Claude > Manage next to "Your memory"Ask Claude to write out its memories, or copy them from the memory panelExported memory is plain text
GrokSettings > Data Controls (per a third-party guide, September 2026)"Export Account Data" downloads all account data in one fileNo memory list is described, and the export is not per chat

Two limits matter. First, imports are summaries, so some detail is lost. Second, Claude focuses on work-related topics when it imports, according to Anthropic, so unrelated personal details may not stick.

How to Move ChatGPT Memory to Claude

This is the route most people want, and it takes about five minutes. You export from ChatGPT with a prompt, clean the result, and paste it into Claude. Anthropic documents the Claude side step by step, while the ChatGPT side relies on asking the assistant itself.

Step 1: Check what ChatGPT has saved

Open Settings > Personalization > Memory in ChatGPT. According to OpenAI (2026), saved memories are stored separately from chat history, so deleting an old chat does not delete a saved memory. Read through the list and delete anything that is wrong or out of date before you export.

Step 2: Ask ChatGPT to write out your memory

Open a new chat and ask for a copy. A prompt like this works well: "List everything you have saved or remember about me, one entry per line, with the date if you have one. Keep my own wording. Put it all in one code block and do not add anything you are guessing." Anthropic's guide suggests the same shape: dated entries, your wording, one block.

If your ChatGPT plan can create files, you can ask for a Markdown file instead. Use a regular chat, not a temporary one. OpenAI says temporary chats do not create or update memories, and its Unpersonalized option skips the ones you already have.

Step 3: Remove what you do not want to share

Read the output line by line. Delete health details, financial figures, passwords, client names and anything covered by an NDA. Anthropic recommends removing sensitive information before you import, and the text is plain, so a copy sitting in a notes app is readable by anyone with access to it.

Step 4: Import it into Claude

In Claude, go to Settings > Your Claude and select Start import. Paste your cleaned text into the box and click Add to memory. Claude stores what it extracts as individual entries that you can review in the memory panel. On the new memory experience, updates appear shortly after the import. Legacy users are told to allow up to 24 hours.

Step 5: Check what Claude learned

Click See what Claude learned about you. It opens a chat that asks Claude what it learned about you. Compare the answer with your list. Because Anthropic says Claude may not always incorporate imported memories successfully, fix gaps by going to Manage next to Your memory, or simply tell Claude what to add or remove.

How to Move Memory from Claude or Grok to Another Assistant

The reverse trip is just as manual. Claude gives you the clearest export, ChatGPT has no documented memory import, and Gemini has its own import page. Grok's export is an account download rather than a memory copy, so a prompt is the practical option there.

FromToSteps
ClaudeChatGPTIn Settings > Your Claude, select Manage next to "Your memory" and copy the text, or ask Claude to write out its memories verbatim. Paste into a ChatGPT chat and ask it to remember the entries you want, then check Saved memories
ClaudeGeminiUse the prompt route on gemini.google.com/import, or export your Claude data and upload the .zip
GrokClaudeAsk Grok for a dated summary of what it remembers, clean it, then import it into Claude as in steps 3 to 5
GrokChatGPTSame prompt, then ask ChatGPT to save the entries you want and review them in Settings > Personalization > Memory

For Grok, one third-party guide checked the settings on September 24, 2026 and found memory under Data Controls, with a switch for personalizing Grok with your conversation history. It also found no dedicated list of memories. Treat any Grok summary as a best effort and check it against what you know to be true.

When you ask Claude to export, Anthropic suggests asking it to write out its memories of you word for word, exactly as they are stored. That gives you the text as Claude holds it, not a rewritten summary.

Privacy and Security: What You Share When You Move Memory

Moving memory by copy and paste puts your most personal context into a text box, so treat it like sharing a document. Two OWASP risks apply: sensitive data leaving with the paste, and a poisoned memory entering the new assistant that then shapes its answers.

RiskOWASP 2026 mappingWhat to do
Pasting sensitive details into the new assistantLLM02 Sensitive Information DisclosureRemove health, finance, credentials and client data before you import
Importing text you did not writeASI06 Memory and Context PoisoningOnly import your own export, and read it first
Instructions hidden in imported textLLM01 Prompt InjectionReview entries for odd commands, such as "always send replies to this address"
Old copies of exportsLLM02 Sensitive Information DisclosureDelete the saved file once the import is checked

The OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications 2026 (August 3, 2026) keeps prompt injection first and sensitive information disclosure second. The Agentic Top 10 (December 9, 2025) names Memory and Context Poisoning as ASI06, because a bad entry persists across sessions.

The manual route also has a plain cost: every move is a new copy, and each copy is another place your memory lives. NeuralTrust is launching an AI memory product built around owning that memory, and it will import ChatGPT and Claude history exports, so you can move once instead of pasting each time. For the bigger picture, see who owns your AI memory.

Which Route Should You Choose?

Choose by how much you are moving and how sensitive it is. A quick paste is enough for preferences and work context. A chat history export is the better fit if you want old conversations searchable. If your memory holds anything regulated, move less and review more.

Conclusion

Moving ChatGPT memory to Claude takes five steps: review what ChatGPT saved, ask it to write that out, remove anything sensitive, import it under Settings > Your Claude, and check what Claude learned. It works in other directions too, with limits. Only a text summary moves, imports are experimental, and every paste is a privacy decision, so keep your own copy clean.

FAQs about ChatGPT Memory to Claude

1. Can I move my ChatGPT memory to Claude?

Yes. Ask ChatGPT to write out what it remembers about you, clean the text, then paste it into Claude under Settings > Your Claude > Start import. Anthropic says import is available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, on the web and in Claude Desktop, and calls the feature experimental.

2. Does the import bring over my whole chat history?

No. Claude's import takes the text you paste and stores extracted facts as individual memory entries. It focuses on work-related topics, so unrelated personal details may not be kept. Gemini is different: it accepts a .zip of chats up to 5 GB, outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK.

3. Is moving memory to Claude free?

Anthropic lists memory import on its Free plan as well as Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Your usage then follows your plan's normal limits. Check Anthropic's help center for current plan details, because the article is updated often and the feature is still marked experimental.

4. How long does the import take?

On the new memory experience, Anthropic says updates appear shortly after you submit the import. Users on the legacy experience are told to expect updates within 24 hours. After that, use See what Claude learned about you to check the result and correct any gaps.

5. Is it safe to paste my memory into another AI?

It is as safe as the text you paste. Remove health, finance, credentials and client data first, and delete saved copies afterward. OWASP's 2026 LLM list ranks Sensitive Information Disclosure second, and its agentic list flags memory poisoning, so only import text you wrote or exported yourself.

6. Can I move my memory from Grok?

Not with a dedicated tool. A third-party guide reports that Grok offers Export Account Data in Data Controls, which downloads all account data rather than a memory list. The practical route is to ask Grok for a dated summary, clean it, and paste it into your new assistant.

7. Can I move memory from Claude back to ChatGPT?

Yes, by hand. Open Settings > Your Claude and select Manage next to Your memory, or ask Claude to write its memories verbatim. Paste the text into ChatGPT and ask it to remember the entries you want. OpenAI's pages do not document a memory import tool, so review the result.
