Perplexity vs ChatGPT: which one should you use in October 2026?
Perplexity is built around cited web answers and lets you pick models from several vendors, while ChatGPT is a broader assistant with its own model family and agents. Pick Perplexity for sourced research and ChatGPT for drafting, coding and agent work, then govern both the same way.
This guide compares Perplexity and OpenAI's ChatGPT on plans, API pricing, search accuracy, agents, data handling, lawsuits and security. We did not test the products. For ChatGPT plans in general, see our Claude vs. ChatGPT and Gemini vs. ChatGPT guides.
TL;DR: Key Takeaways
- Entry prices match, premium tiers diverge. Perplexity Pro and ChatGPT Plus both cost $20 a month, while Perplexity Max is $200 and ChatGPT Pro now runs $100, $200 or $500 (CloudZero, 2026; The Next Web, 2026).
- Perplexity's API bundles search. Sonar Pro costs $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens plus a request fee, and OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol lists $2 and $10 (Perplexity, 2026; DataCamp, 2026).
- Independent search scores favor OpenAI models. On the Arena Search leaderboard, GPT-5.6 Sol scores 1257 and Perplexity's best Sonar model ranks 29th at 1139 (Arena, 2026).
- Citations are never a guarantee. In a 2025 Tow Center test Perplexity still answered incorrectly 37% of the time, the lowest rate of eight engines (Nieman Lab, 2025).
- Perplexity faces at least seven publisher suits. Plaintiffs include Dow Jones, The New York Times, Reddit, Britannica and CNN (Startup Fortune, 2026).
- Agentic browsers remain a governance problem. Gartner advised blocking all AI browsers (CSO Online, 2025), and OpenAI retired its Atlas browser on August 9, 2026 (OpenAI, 2026).

What are Perplexity and ChatGPT in October 2026?
Perplexity is an answer engine from Perplexity AI that returns web-sourced responses with citations and offers a model picker. ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant, combining chat, web search, a Work agent and Codex. The product name tells you less than the model selected.
Perplexity's model lineup
Perplexity's help center lists Sonar 2, GPT-5.6 Terra, Gemini 3.7 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, Grok 4.6 and Nemotron 3 Ultra on Pro. Max adds GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5, plus Model Council, which runs several models on one question. Enterprise admins can restrict models (Perplexity Help Center, 2026). A Perplexity answer therefore often comes from an OpenAI or Anthropic model.
ChatGPT's model lineup
OpenAI announced GPT-6 Astra in September 2026, with API pricing of $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, and added GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Luna and GPT-6.1 Sol by September 29 (OpenAI, 2026). According to DataCamp (2026), GPT-6.1 Sol runs in ChatGPT Work and Codex on paid plans but not in Chat, Free or Go. OpenAI's help center still lists GPT-5.6 Luna for Free and Go and GPT-5.6 Sol for Plus in Chat (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). The lineup changes weekly, so check the in-product picker.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT pricing: plans and API costs
Perplexity Pro and ChatGPT Plus both cost $20 a month. Above that the paths differ: Perplexity Max is $200, while ChatGPT Pro offers $100, $200 and $500 tiers. For teams, Perplexity charges $40 or $325 per seat per month, and ChatGPT Business is $20 per user per month billed annually.
The free tiers differ: Perplexity Free is $0 with limited Pro Searches, and ChatGPT Free is $0 with GPT-5.6 Luna and ads for US users. ChatGPT Go costs $8, and Pro $100 or $200 equals 5x or 20x Plus usage (CloudZero, 2026). The $500 Pro 500 tier was announced at DevDay on September 29 (The Next Web, 2026).
Perplexity's annual Enterprise prices are $400 and $3,250 per seat. Comet is free, and Pro includes 4,000 bonus Computer credits while Max adds 10,000 monthly credits (CloudZero, 2026).
API pricing
| Model | Input per 1M tokens | Output per 1M tokens | Cost of 1M input + 200K output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity Sonar | $1 | $1 | $1.20 plus request fees |
| Perplexity Sonar Pro | $3 | $15 | $6 plus request fees |
| OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol | $2 | $10 | $4 |
| OpenAI GPT-6 Astra | $10 | $50 | $20 |

Sonar request fees run from $5 to $12 per 1,000 requests for Sonar and $6 to $14 for Sonar Pro, depending on search context size (Perplexity, 2026). Every Sonar call includes live search. We did not verify fees for OpenAI's web search tool, so price both before you commit.
Search and citation accuracy: who answers better?
OpenAI models lead the Arena Search leaderboard, while Perplexity did best in the one citation audit we found, and both still make citation errors in testing. Treat both as sources to verify, and check any claim that drives a business decision.
| Independent measure | Perplexity | ChatGPT / OpenAI |
|---|---|---|
| Arena Search score (August 24, 2026) | 1139 (sonar-reasoning-pro-high, rank 29), 1130 (sonar-pro-high, rank 31) | 1257 (GPT-5.6 Sol xhigh, rank 1), 1242 (GPT-5.5 search, rank 3) |
| Tow Center citation test (March 2025) | Incorrect 37% of the time, lowest of eight engines | 134 incorrect citations, hedged in only 15 |
Sources: Arena, Nieman Lab.
Two caveats apply. The Arena board scores API search models, while Perplexity's app routes many queries to third-party models. The Tow Center study is from March 2025, before today's models. OpenAI itself warns that "search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect" (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). ChatGPT search is available on every plan, including Free.
How we compared
We did not run any tests. We read vendor pricing and help pages, public leaderboards and named press reports, checked between September 21 and October 5, 2026. Pricing from outlets such as CloudZero is secondary, so confirm it on vendor pages before purchase.
Agents and browsers: Comet and Computer against ChatGPT Work
Perplexity offers the Comet browser and the Computer agent, while OpenAI folded its Atlas browser into the ChatGPT desktop app and a Chrome extension. Both vendors sell agents that act on logged-in accounts, so approval rules and logging are the key buying criteria.
Perplexity: Comet and Computer
Perplexity introduced Computer on February 25, 2026 for Max subscribers, describing a digital worker that runs sub-agents in isolated environments (Perplexity, 2026). Perplexity says each task runs in a Firecracker microVM and that audit logs integrate with Splunk, Azure Sentinel and Datadog (Perplexity, 2026). Comet for Enterprise adds MDM deployment, more than 500 Chromium policies and action approvals (Perplexity Help Center, 2026).
ChatGPT: Work, Codex and the Atlas retirement
ChatGPT Work is an agent for multi-step deliverables, and OpenAI says browser use and network access have separate controls and that actions needing approval show on-screen prompts (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). OpenAI announced Atlas retirement on July 9 and ended it on August 9, 2026, moving its features into the desktop app and a Chrome extension. Atlas also stopped receiving security updates (OpenAI Help Center, 2026).
Enterprise controls and data handling
Both vendors say they do not train on business data, and both report SOC 2 Type 2 audits. The larger difference sits with consumer plans, where each trains on your content by default unless you opt out. Retention periods and admin features then separate the tiers.
| Control | Perplexity | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer training default | On, opt out in settings, applies only to later data | On, opt out via "Improve the model for everyone"; feedback overrides opt-out |
| Business training | Enterprise data never used for training | Not trained on by default for Business, Enterprise and API |
| Retention | Thread files deleted after 7 days; custom retention at 50+ Pro seats or 1 Max seat | Business deleted chats purged within 30 days; API 30 days, zero retention for eligible endpoints |
| Certifications | SOC 2 Type II | SOC 2 Type 2; ISO 27001 on Enterprise |

Perplexity lists SCIM and audit logs with Enterprise Max, and OpenAI lists SCIM, key management and 10 data residency regions with Enterprise. A personal Free, Pro or Max account sits outside these protections.
Publisher lawsuits and legal exposure
Perplexity faces at least seven publisher suits, against one major pending copyright case for OpenAI. The enterprise risk is mostly indirect, such as service changes or content gaps, but it belongs in vendor due diligence, especially for workflows that depend on licensed news content.
According to Startup Fortune (2026), plaintiffs include Dow Jones and the New York Post, The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, Reddit, Britannica, CNN and Japanese publishers Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun. CNN's May 28, 2026 suit alleges Perplexity pulled more than 17,000 of its items without payment. A judge let Reddit's core claims proceed after a July 31, 2026 dismissal motion.
One ruling went Perplexity's way. On August 4, 2026 the Ninth Circuit vacated Amazon's injunction against Comet's shopping agent, holding that the user, not Perplexity, accesses Amazon's systems under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (Jones Day, 2026). OpenAI is not exempt: TechCrunch (2026) reports a July 2026 sanctions motion in the New York Times case, which OpenAI denies.
Perplexity and ChatGPT security: what enterprises need to know
Both products now browse, call tools and act with user permissions, so indirect prompt injection is the main enterprise risk. According to OWASP (2025), indirect injection arrives through websites and files, and its mitigations include least privilege and human approval for high-risk actions.
Documented incidents and vendor responses
| Date | Product | Finding | Response |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Comet | Brave showed injection through summarization; Guardio showed purchases on fake shops | Disclosed by independent researchers |
| Oct 2025 to Feb 2026 | Comet | Calendar-invite injection could read local files | Stricter boundaries in February 2026 |
| Nov 2025 | Comet | SquareX said an MCP API could run local commands | Perplexity called it contrived, then patched |
| Dec 2025 | ChatGPT Atlas | OpenAI said prompt injection may never be fully solved | Adversarial training update |

Perplexity says it audited Comet before launch and open-sourced BrowseSafe in December 2025, a detection model and benchmark with 14,719 examples (Perplexity, 2025). Gartner went further, writing that organizations should "block all AI browsers for the foreseeable future" (CSO Online, 2025).
How NeuralTrust addresses this
Model-level defenses reduce injection risk but do not remove it, so controls should not depend on the vendor behind the agent. Agent Gateway (TrustGate) enforces policy between agents, tools and either provider. Agent Runtime Security (TrustGuard) inspects prompts, tool calls and outputs as they happen. AI Red Teaming (TrustTest) lets you run your own injection tests before approval, and Agent Posture Management (TrustLens) shows which agents hold which permissions. Together they form the Runtime Security Mesh, backed by four Gartner Hype Cycle 2026 recognitions in AI Runtime Defense. For the OpenAI side, see our GPT-6 Astra CISO guide, and learn more about AI agent security and the AI Gateway.
Which should you choose?
Choose by workload and by what you can govern. Perplexity wins on sourced web research and multi-vendor model choice, and ChatGPT wins on independent search scores, agent breadth and plan flexibility. Use the table to match your role to a verdict.
| If you are... | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An analyst who needs cited web research | Perplexity | Citations are default, and it had the lowest error rate in the 2025 Tow Center test |
| A team that wants one seat with several vendors' models | Perplexity Pro or Max | Pro lists models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and others |
| A developer building search into an app | Evaluate both | Sonar bundles search, while GPT-6.1 Sol is cheaper per token than Sonar Pro |
| A writer, coder or knowledge worker | ChatGPT | Work, Codex and file tools, plus the top Arena Search score |
| A buyer comparing team plans | ChatGPT Business | $20 per user per month annual, with no training by default |
| A security team piloting agents | Neither by default | Gartner advises blocking AI browsers, so pilot with approvals |
Conclusion
The Perplexity vs ChatGPT choice comes down to research style and governance. Perplexity gives sourced answers and a wide model menu but faces many publisher suits and Comet incidents. ChatGPT scores higher on independent search tests and offers a broader plan range. Run both through the same approval, logging and red teaming controls before they touch production data.

FAQs about Perplexity vs ChatGPT
1. Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT?
It depends on the task. Perplexity returns cited web answers by default and had the lowest error rate in the 2025 Tow Center test, at 37%. ChatGPT scores higher on Arena Search, 1257 against 1139, and covers more agent and coding work (Arena, 2026).
2. Is Perplexity Pro worth it compared with ChatGPT Plus?
Both cost $20 a month. Perplexity Pro bundles models from several vendors and Computer credits, while ChatGPT Plus adds Work and Codex with GPT-6 family access. Pick Pro for research-heavy use with sources, and Plus for drafting, coding and agent work (CloudZero, 2026).
3. Does Perplexity use ChatGPT models?
Yes, in part. Perplexity's help center lists GPT-5.6 Terra on Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol on Max, alongside Claude, Gemini, Grok and its own Sonar 2. The model you pick determines the answer more than the Perplexity brand does (Perplexity Help Center, 2026).
4. How much does the Perplexity API cost compared with OpenAI?
Sonar costs $1 per million input and output tokens, and Sonar Pro costs $3 and $15, both plus request fees. OpenAI lists GPT-6.1 Sol at $2 and $10 and GPT-6 Astra at $10 and $50. Sonar includes live search in every call (Perplexity, 2026).
5. Is Perplexity safe for enterprise use?
Perplexity reports SOC 2 Type II and says Enterprise data is never used for training, with thread files deleted after seven days. Consumer plans train by default unless you opt out. Comet has had injection findings, so restrict agentic features until your controls are tested (Perplexity, 2025).
6. Does ChatGPT train on my data?
On Free and Plus it can, unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone," and giving feedback on a chat can override that choice. OpenAI says it does not train on Business, Enterprise or API data by default (OpenAI, 2026).
7. What happened to ChatGPT Atlas?
OpenAI announced Atlas retirement on July 9, 2026 and stopped it on August 9. Its features moved into the ChatGPT desktop app and a Chrome extension, and Atlas received no further security updates, so confirm no managed device still runs it (OpenAI Help Center, 2026).
8. Is Perplexity being sued?
Yes. Plaintiffs include Dow Jones, The New York Times, Reddit, Britannica, CNN and Japanese publishers Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun. Perplexity won one appeal on August 4, 2026, when the Ninth Circuit vacated Amazon's injunction against Comet's shopping agent (Startup Fortune, 2026).
