Perplexity vs Claude: which one should you use in 2026?

Perplexity is an AI search product built around cited answers from the live web, with several vendors' models behind one subscription. Claude, from Anthropic, is a model family and app suite strongest at long-context reasoning, writing and coding, and it can search the web too. Many teams use both.

This guide compares plans, search, the API, agents, enterprise controls and security records. Every figure is dated and linked, and vendor-reported results are labeled.

TL;DR: Key Takeaways

  • Prices start in the same place. Perplexity Pro and Claude Pro both cost $20 per month, while Perplexity Max is $200 and Claude Max starts at $100 (Perplexity, 2026; Anthropic, 2026).
  • Perplexity wins on live-sourced answers. Its Agent API lists web search at $0.0025 per invocation, against $10 per 1,000 searches for Claude's API search tool (Perplexity docs, 2026; Claude docs, 2026).
  • Claude wins on the model. Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 offer a 1 million token context window, and Anthropic reports Opus 5.5 at 66.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 (Anthropic, 2026).
  • Independent search votes favor Claude models. On Arena's Search Arena, Claude Opus 4.6 with search scores 1253 and Perplexity's Sonar Reasoning Pro scores 1139 (Arena, August 24, 2026).
  • Both agentic browsers have disclosed flaws. Anthropic reports an 11.2% attack success rate for Claude in Chrome after mitigations, and Gartner advised blocking AI browsers, Comet included, on December 8, 2025 (Anthropic, 2025; The Register, 2025).

What is the difference between Perplexity and Claude?

Perplexity is a search product that retrieves sources first and writes an answer around them. Claude is a model family that reasons over what you give it, with web search as a tool.

Perplexity's pricing page says every plan reaches models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and NVIDIA. Its Agent API lists Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 at Anthropic's own rates (Perplexity, 2026; Perplexity docs, 2026). A Perplexity subscriber can use Claude inside Perplexity, but Claude runs only Anthropic models.

How we compared

We did not test these products. We read vendor pricing, documentation and announcements, plus independent sources such as Arena, the Tow Center and Gartner. Vendor-reported figures are labeled. Everything was checked on October 5, 2026.

According to the Claude Help Center (2026), Enterprise seats cover platform access only, so budget on usage.

Search, citations and research: where each one leads

Perplexity is built around sourced answers. Claude's web search also cites sources, and its Research mode compiles multi-source reports. Independent voting favors Claude models: they rank far above Perplexity's Sonar models on Search Arena's August 2026 snapshot.

What independent data shows

Search Arena entryScoreVotesRank

Source: Arena, leaderboard dated August 24, 2026, 34 models and 1.11 million votes. Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 were not yet listed.

Two cautions apply. The board tests Sonar API models, not the Perplexity app, which can route to other vendors' models. Perplexity's own April 2025 post, a vendor claim, said Sonar Reasoning Pro High was statistically tied for first. It added that Sonar cited 2 to 3 times more sources than comparable Gemini models (Perplexity, 2025).

Citation accuracy and research depth

In a Tow Center test run in February 2025, Perplexity gave incorrect answers to 37% of queries asking it to identify news articles. Claude was not among the eight tools tested (Columbia Journalism Review, 2025). We found no current independent test of both products on this task or on research modes.

Claude Research can read Gmail, Calendar and Docs when connected (Claude Help Center, 2026).

Models and API: Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Perplexity's Agent API

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22, 2026 at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. Sonnet 5.5 followed on September 28 at $2 and $10. Both have a 1 million token context window. Perplexity serves the same Claude models through its Agent API at the same list price.

For developers, Perplexity's documentation says Sonar Chat Completions support ended on September 27, 2026, with synchronous and streaming requests converted to Agent API calls (Perplexity docs, 2026). For model-level detail on Claude, including its security results, see NeuralTrust's Claude Opus 5.5 enterprise analysis (2026).

Agents: Comet, Computer, Claude in Chrome and Claude Code

Perplexity ships Comet, a free agentic browser, and Computer, a cloud agent funded by credits. Claude offers Claude in Chrome, an extension that acts on pages for you, and Claude Code for terminal work.

Comet has been free since October 2, 2025 (Fello AI, 2026). Computer runs tasks in a cloud sandbox and gives Max subscribers 10,000 credits per month (Perplexity Help Center, 2026). Claude in Chrome reached Max users on November 24, 2025 and Pro, Team and Enterprise on December 18, 2025 (Anthropic, 2025).

Coding is the clearer split. Claude Code is part of the Pro plan, and Anthropic reports Opus 5.5 at 66.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, a vendor figure (Anthropic, 2026). For more on the Claude Code side, see our Claude Code vs Cursor guide.

Privacy and enterprise controls compared

Both vendors keep business data out of training, but consumer defaults differ. Perplexity Free, Pro and Max have AI data retention on by default, and Claude uses chats for training only if you opt in to Model Improvement. For regulated teams, the contract tier matters more.

Perplexity and Claude security: what enterprises need to know

Neither product is immune to prompt injection, and both have disclosed incidents. According to OWASP (2025), prompt injection is the first risk (LLM01) in its Top 10 for LLM applications. Indirect injection through web pages and files is the form that reaches browsing agents.

Perplexity's record

Brave reported indirect prompt injection in Comet on August 20, 2025. LayerX reported "CometJacking," and says Perplexity marked it not applicable (PPC Land, 2025; LayerX, 2025). PPC Land adds that Perplexity said on October 22, 2025 that injection "remains an unsolved problem across the industry."

A further vulnerability family disclosed on March 4, 2026 let hostile content steer Comet toward local files and password-manager access. Perplexity fixed the browser-side issue before disclosure (Help Net Security, 2026). Perplexity says it released BrowseSafe, an open injection-detection model with a 14,719-example benchmark, on December 2, 2025 (Perplexity, 2025).

Claude's record

Anthropic reports that Claude in Chrome's attack success rate in autonomous mode fell from 23.6% to 11.2% after mitigations (Anthropic, 2025). That is vendor-reported, and 11.2% is not zero. Koi disclosed ShadowPrompt on March 26, 2026, a zero-click chain that let a hostile site inject instructions into the extension. Anthropic patched it on January 15, 2026 (Penligent, 2026).

At model level, Anthropic reports Opus 5.5 ties Fable 5.1 for the lowest prompt injection success rate on the Gray Swan benchmark (Anthropic, 2026). Gartner's advisory "Cybersecurity Must Block AI Browsers for Now" named Comet and ChatGPT Atlas and warned of data exposure and rogue agent actions (The Register, 2025). Claude in Chrome is an extension, not a standalone browser, but in our assessment the same reasoning applies to any agent that acts inside authenticated sessions.

How NeuralTrust addresses this

Control must sit where agents act, whichever model they use. Agent Gateway (TrustGate) enforces policy between agents, tools and any provider, whether you route to Claude, Perplexity or both (AI Gateway). Agent Runtime Security (TrustGuard) inspects prompts, tool calls and outputs in flight (Agent Security). AI Red Teaming (TrustTest) tests injection resistance before approval (Red Teaming), and Agent Posture Management (TrustLens) maps which agents reach which tools. NeuralTrust delivers these as the Runtime Security Mesh, with four Gartner Hype Cycle 2026 recognitions in AI Runtime Defense.

Conclusion

Perplexity vs Claude is a choice between a search layer and a reasoning layer, and many organizations will pay for both. Perplexity is built for cited, live-sourced answers and offers multi-model access. Claude leads on independent search votes among the models tested, long context and coding. Neither has solved prompt injection, so test each against your own threats before agents touch production data.
